Day 1: Luang Prabang – Sacred Temples & Textile Traditions (L, D)

Welcome to our Luang Prabang office! We’ll begin with a professional bike fitting to ensure you’re perfectly dialled in for our cycling holiday. Afterward, enjoy a scenic warm-up ride through the historic peninsula.

Highlights include Wat XiengThong (the “Temple of the Golden City”), a 16th-century masterpiece of Lao craftsmanship, and the Royal Palace National Museum. As you explore the former royal residence, you’ll witness a unique blend of traditional Lao motifs and French Beaux-Arts architecture housing the kingdom’s most sacred artifacts.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, we will visit a nearby textile village to observe traditional weaving techniques and learn about the region’s rich cultural heritage. We conclude the day by returning to your hotel for a relaxing overnight stay.

Day 2: Luang Prabang – Western Luang Prabang & The Turquoise Cascades of Kuang Si (B, L)

This beautiful day will be spent cycling through “The Quiet Side” of Luang Prabang. We navigate peaceful lanes and small villages where children often greet cyclists with a friendly, “Sabaidee!”

Mekong Navigation & The Falls

After our village exploration, we embark on a scenic 45-minute boat ride to Ban Mueng Khay. Relax on deck and watch river life drift by before we begin our final approach toward the mountains. Upon arrival at the breathtaking, multi-tiered Kuang Si Waterfall, we celebrate the ride with a gourmet picnic lunch set against a backdrop of limestone pools. Take a refreshing dip in the turquoise waters or hike the forest trails to the upper falls.

Lao Buffalo Dairy

On the return journey, we stop at the Lao Buffalo Dairy, a pioneering social enterprise. Learn how they support local farmers through sustainable dairy production and perhaps reward yourself with their famous buffalo milk ice cream!

Day 3: The High-Speed Passage to the Karsts of Vang Vieng (B, L, D)

This morning, we transition from the saddle to the rails, boarding the modern high-speed train for a swift journey south. This route cuts through the rugged northern mountains, offering glimpses of remote valleys unreachable by road.

Upon arrival in Vang Vieng, a town famed for its dramatic limestone topography, we embark on an afternoon cycling loop. This ride takes us across the Nam Song River and into the heart of the “Loop,” where jagged karst peaks rise abruptly from emerald rice paddies. The afternoon light provides an exceptional backdrop for photography before we settle into our riverside hotel.

Day 4: Valley Vistas and the Monuments of Vientiane (B, L, D)

After an early breakfast, we begin a scenic 50-kilometer ride through the undulating landscapes of the Vang Vieng valley. The road is lined with small roadside markets and schoolhouses, offering a window into the daily rhythm of rural life.

In the afternoon, we transfer into Vientiane, the most relaxed capital city in Southeast Asia. Our guided city tour includes Pha That Luang, a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa and national symbol, and the Patuxay Monument, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe but adorned with intricate Lao motifs. We conclude the day with a walk along the Mekong promenade as the sun sets over Thailand on the opposite bank.

Day 5: Riverside Pathways and the Limestone Gateway (B, L, D)

Our day begins with a transfer to the surreal Buddha Park (Wat Xieng Khuan), an outdoor sculpture park filled with over 200 eccentric Buddhist and Hindu statues. The cycling leg kicks off directly from the park, following the scenic curves of the Mekong River. The terrain is largely flat, allowing for a steady pace through rural agricultural heartlands.

Following our 35km ride, we transfer toward the Hin Boun region as the landscape shifts from open plains back into dramatic limestone formations. We arrive in the late afternoon at the entrance to the Kong Lor Valley, settling into a rustic yet comfortable bungalow nestled in the forest.

Day 6: The Subterranean Wonders of Kong Lor Cave (B, L)

Today is dedicated to one of the most remarkable natural wonders in Southeast Asia. We board traditional long-tail boats to navigate the Kong Lor Cave, a 7-kilometer underground river passage. The cave reaches heights of 100 meters, featuring spectacular stalactites and stalagmites illuminated by torchlight.

We emerge on the far side in the remote village of Ban Nathan, where we enjoy a short walk to understand local tobacco and rice farming practices. After returning through the cave, the afternoon is spent exploring the valley, interacting with the curious locals of this secluded region.

Day 7: The Trans-Laos Crossing to Laksao (B, L, D)

The ride is physically demanding but visually spectacular, featuring the famous “Stone Forest”—a labyrinth of razor-sharp limestone peaks. We climb steadily, rewarded by panoramic views of the central Lao wilderness, before arriving in the mountain town of Laksao for a well-deserved evening of rest.

Day 8: Descent Through the Nakai Plateau to Thakhek (B, L, D)

Following breakfast, we cycle through the lush landscapes of the Nakai Plateau, an area known for its unique ecosystem and the expansive reservoir of the Nam Theun 2 project. We enjoy lunch overlooking the serene waters, where dead trees rise from the lake like natural sculptures.

The afternoon features a thrilling descent from the plateau into the Mekong valley. As the altitude drops, we utilize our support vehicle for a transfer into the French-colonial town of Thakhek. We celebrate the day’s achievements at a beautiful riverside restaurant overlooking the Mekong River.

After completing a scenic 73-kilometer ride, we hop into our support vehicle for a smooth transfer to Pakse, the gateway to Southern Laos. Situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Sedone Rivers, Pakse serves as our base for exploring the southern highlands.

Day 10: The Mist-Shrouded Bolaven Plateau (B, L, D)

Today we ascend by support vehicle to the fertile volcanic heights of the Bolaven Plateau, famed for its world-class coffee and tea plantations. The climb provides a refreshing drop in temperature. Our first stop is the majestic Tad Fane waterfall, where twin cascades plunge 120 meters into a deep jungle gorge.

Our cycling journey kicks off from here, riding toward Pak Song for lunch. We spend the afternoon cycling through lush coffee farms, learning about the “Red Gold” of Laos before reaching the tranquil Tad Lo region.

Day 11: The UNESCO Heritage of Wat Phou (B, L, D)

Day 12: Entry to the 4,000 Islands (B, L, D)

This morning is dedicated to exploring the ancient Wat Phou temple complex. This UNESCO World Heritage site is an exceptional example of early Khmer architecture, dating back to the 6th century and predating Cambodia’s Angkor Wat complex. We explore ancient promenades, spring-fed sanctuaries, and intricate stone carvings clinging to the base of Lingaparvata mountain.

A short ride brings us to the quiet colonial town of Champasak. We continue our cycling journey into the Sukuma District for a local lunch. Taking a local ferry, we enter a breathtaking region where the river widens to nearly 14 kilometers, creating an archipelago known as Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands). We cycle along peaceful backroads shaded by coconut palms and bamboo groves to Don Khong, the largest island in the archipelago.

Day 13: Island Hopping & The French Colonial Legacy (B, L, D)

Today is a highlight for many: cycling through the smaller, interconnected islands of the archipelago. We use local wooden ferries to “hop” between Don Som, Don Khon, and Don Det.

We explore the remnants of the historic French railway—built to bypass the impassable Mekong falls—and visit the thunderous Liphi Falls, often called the “Devil’s Corridor.” The ride takes us through emerald rice paddies and past local fishermen using traditional traps before we return to Don Khong for our final evening on the islands.

After lunch, we drive back north to Pakse. In the evening, we gather for a formal farewell dinner to share stories of the road and celebrate the completion of this epic cross-country cycling odyssey.

Day 15: Departure from Pakse (B)
